Top Causes of Car Overheating and What to Do

A temperature warning light, steam from under the bonnet or a gauge climbing into the red is not a fault to “keep an eye on”. The top causes of car overheating can quickly turn a manageable repair into engine damage if the car is driven on. Pull over somewhere safe, switch the engine off and let it cool down. Do not remove the coolant cap while the engine is hot.

In most cases, overheating means the cooling system is losing coolant, cannot circulate it properly or cannot get rid of heat. The right repair depends on finding the actual cause. Topping up coolant may get you moving briefly, but it will not fix a leak, failed component or blockage.

What to do when your car overheats

If the temperature warning light comes on, reduce the load on the engine straight away. Turn off the air conditioning, pull over as soon as it is safe and stop the engine. If you see steam, smell a sweet coolant smell or notice coolant pouring out, do not attempt to continue your journey.

Leave the car to cool fully before checking anything under the bonnet. Once cold, you can look for obvious signs such as a split hose, wet patches around the radiator or a low coolant level in the expansion tank. Never pour cold water over a hot engine, and never open a pressurised coolant cap while hot. Both can cause injury or make the problem worse.

A recovery or prompt diagnostic check is usually the sensible next step. Modern engines do not tolerate overheating well. Even one serious overheating event can damage the head gasket or distort engine components.

Top causes of car overheating

Low coolant caused by a leak

Low coolant is one of the most common causes we see. Coolant carries heat away from the engine and into the radiator. When the level drops, there may not be enough fluid to do that job properly.

Leaks can come from a hose, hose clip, radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, expansion tank or a worn seal. Some are easy to spot because they leave a puddle beneath the car. Others only leak when the system is hot and under pressure, so there may be no obvious drip on the drive.

You might notice the heater blowing cold while the engine runs hot, a coolant warning message, a sweet smell after driving or regular need to top up the expansion tank. Repeatedly adding coolant is not a repair. A garage needs to pressure-test the system, identify the leak and replace the faulty part before refilling it with the correct coolant mixture.

A thermostat stuck closed

The thermostat controls when coolant flows from the engine to the radiator. When the engine is cold, it stays closed to help the engine warm up. Once the engine reaches operating temperature, it opens so heat can be released through the radiator.

If it sticks shut, hot coolant remains trapped around the engine. The temperature can rise quickly, particularly in traffic or on a longer run. Sometimes the top radiator hose stays relatively cool even though the engine is overheating, but this is not a reliable home test on every vehicle.

A failed thermostat is often a straightforward repair when caught early. Leaving it can cause repeated overheating and put pressure on the rest of the cooling system.

A faulty water pump

The water pump keeps coolant circulating. If the pump fails, leaks or its internal impeller wears down, coolant may be present but not moving around the engine as it should.

This usually happens because of age, a failing bearing, damage to the drive belt or, on some engines, an issue linked to the timing belt system. Signs can include overheating that gets worse with engine speed, a coolant leak around the pump area, a whining noise or poor cabin heating.

Water pump replacement can vary significantly from one car to another. On some vehicles it is accessible; on others it is part of a larger cambelt job. A proper inspection avoids replacing parts on a guess and allows the repair plan to be explained clearly before work starts.

Radiator problems or blocked coolant passages

The radiator removes heat from the coolant using airflow through its fins. If it is blocked internally, corroded, leaking or clogged externally with dirt and debris, it cannot cool the engine efficiently.

This fault often shows up when the car is working harder, such as sitting in slow traffic, towing or driving on a warm day. The engine may appear fine on a short trip but overheat after longer use. An ageing radiator can also develop small leaks around the seams that only become obvious under pressure.

The solution may be a radiator replacement, a system flush where appropriate, or repair of related pipework. A flush is not always the answer. If the radiator is badly corroded or restricted, replacing it is normally the more reliable long-term fix.

Cooling fan not cutting in

When you are driving at speed, air naturally passes through the radiator. In queues, town driving and when parked with the engine running, the electric cooling fan does that work instead.

If the fan motor, fuse, relay, wiring, temperature sensor or control module fails, the car may overheat mainly in traffic but settle down once moving. This pattern is a useful clue, although it still needs testing. The fan may also run after you switch the ignition off, which can be normal on some cars if the engine bay is hot.

We often see this issue when a driver says their car is fine on an open road but the temperature rises during the school run or while waiting at roadworks. Electrical diagnostics can confirm whether the fan is being commanded on and whether it is actually operating.

Head gasket failure

A head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and cylinder head. If overheating has already occurred, the gasket can fail and allow combustion gases, oil or coolant to pass where they should not.

Common signs include ongoing coolant loss with no clear external leak, white smoke from the exhaust after the engine is warm, pressure building quickly in the cooling system, rough running and contamination in the oil or coolant. Not every head gasket fault produces every symptom, so it needs proper testing rather than assumptions.

A head gasket repair is more involved than a hose or thermostat replacement. The important thing is to establish whether it is the root cause or damage caused by an earlier cooling fault. Repairing the gasket without resolving the original leak, pump or fan problem can lead to the same issue returning.

Air trapped in the cooling system

Air pockets can stop coolant circulating properly and create hot spots in the engine. This can happen after coolant work if the system has not been bled correctly, or after a leak has allowed air to enter.

Symptoms may include an erratic temperature gauge, gurgling behind the dashboard, weak heating and a coolant level that changes after a journey. Some vehicles need a specific bleeding procedure or diagnostic equipment to operate pumps and valves during refilling.

This is why coolant repairs should not be treated as a simple top-up job. The system must be refilled to the correct level, bled properly and checked again once the engine has reached temperature.

Why driving through overheating is a costly gamble

Some drivers hope the warning light will disappear after a few minutes. It sometimes does, especially if the fault is intermittent, but the engine has still been running above its safe temperature. Aluminium engine components can distort, hoses can burst and oil can lose its ability to protect moving parts.

There is a trade-off if you are close to home or work: stopping can be inconvenient, while continuing can create a much larger repair. If the gauge is climbing, the warning light is on or steam is visible, stopping is the lower-risk choice.
