That tyre pressure warning light usually appears at the worst time: on the school run, before work, or just as you are setting off for a longer journey. Knowing how to reset tyre pressure can be useful, but resetting the light is only safe after you have found out why it came on in the first place. A reset will not repair a puncture, damaged tyre or leaking valve.
In most cases, the light comes on because one or more tyres are below the pressure set by the vehicle manufacturer. That can happen gradually as temperatures drop, or more suddenly after a puncture. Check the tyres properly first, then reset the tyre pressure monitoring system only when the pressures are right.
What the tyre pressure warning light is telling you
The tyre pressure monitoring system, often called TPMS, is there to warn you that a tyre may not be safe to drive on. Some cars use sensors inside each wheel to measure pressure directly. Others use the ABS wheel-speed sensors to spot when one tyre is turning differently because it has become softer.
The dashboard symbol is normally a yellow tyre-shaped outline with an exclamation mark. If it comes on and stays on, pressure is usually low in at least one tyre. If it flashes for around a minute before staying on, the system itself may have a fault. That could be a failed sensor battery, damaged sensor, wiring issue or a problem after tyres have been changed.
Do not assume the light is a false alarm simply because the car feels normal. Modern tyres can lose a fair amount of air before the handling becomes obviously different. Driving on an underinflated tyre creates extra heat, affects braking and steering, and can damage the tyre beyond repair.
Check the tyres before you reset anything
Park on level ground and check the tyres when they are cold. Cold means the car has been standing for a few hours or has only travelled a short distance at low speed. Pressure rises as tyres warm up, so checking straight after a motorway run can give you a misleading reading.
You will find the correct pressures on a sticker, usually inside the driver’s door shut, behind the fuel flap, or in the vehicle handbook. Use the figures for your normal load. If you are carrying several passengers, heavy equipment or towing, there may be a separate higher-pressure setting.
Check all four tyres with a reliable gauge, even if only one looks low. Look closely at the tread and sidewalls while you are there. A nail or screw, a cut, a bulge, cracking around the valve, or unusual wear needs attention before the car is used normally. Do not forget the spare wheel if your vehicle has one, as some systems monitor it too.
A tyre that is only slightly low may simply need air. If one tyre is much lower than the others, inflate it to the correct pressure and check it again later that day or the following morning. If it has dropped again, there is a leak and the tyre needs inspecting.
How to reset tyre pressure after inflating the tyres
The exact reset method depends on the make, model and year of the vehicle. Many newer cars reset themselves after you have adjusted the pressures and driven for a short distance. Others need you to save the new pressures through the dashboard menu or press a dedicated TPMS button.
Use this practical order:
- Set every tyre to the manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall – that is not the correct running pressure for your car.
- Switch the ignition on. On keyless cars, this may mean pressing the start button without pressing the clutch or brake pedal.
- Find the tyre pressure reset or calibration option. It may be in the vehicle settings menu, under car, service or driver assistance. On some models, there is a button low down on the dashboard or in the glovebox.
- Select reset, set or calibrate, then confirm it when the vehicle asks you to. The system is now being told that the current pressures are the correct baseline.
- Drive the car normally. An indirect TPMS may need several minutes of driving, sometimes at speeds above 20 mph, before the warning light goes out.
If the light remains on after a proper reset and a short drive, stop guessing. Recheck the pressures and inspect the tyres again. It may be a slow puncture, a wheel rim leak or a TPMS fault rather than a reset issue.
If your car has a TPMS button
A separate TPMS button is common on some vehicles. With the tyres correctly inflated and the ignition on, press and hold the button until the warning lamp flashes or the dashboard confirms calibration has started. Release it, then drive the vehicle as normal.
The button location varies, so do not press random switches. Check the handbook if you are unsure. A button reset can clear the warning light, but it cannot tell you which tyre is losing air or whether the valve has failed.
If the reset is in the dashboard menu
Cars with a central display often place the setting in the vehicle menu. Look for wording such as “Tyre pressure”, “TPMS”, “Store pressure” or “Initialise”. Select the option only after checking the pressures manually.
Some cars display individual tyre readings. Treat these as a useful guide, but use a physical gauge when a reading looks wrong. Sensor data can lag behind after inflation, and a sensor fault can show an implausible pressure or no reading at all.
Why the warning light comes back on
We often see drivers inflate a tyre, reset the system and assume the job is done. Then the warning light returns a few days later. That usually happens because the underlying cause has not been fixed.
A small puncture is a common cause. A screw can stay lodged in the tread and allow air out slowly, so the tyre may look fine at first. Leaks can also come from a corroded wheel rim, especially on older alloy wheels, or from a worn valve. A tyre with a damaged sidewall, bulge or deep cut should not be repaired by simply adding air.
Cold weather is another reason for a warning light. As the temperature falls, tyre pressure falls too. A tyre that was already close to the minimum recommended figure may trigger the system on a cold morning. Inflate it to the correct cold pressure, reset if required, and keep an eye on it. If the pressure stays stable, there may be no further issue.
Uneven tyre wear can point to a different problem. If one edge is wearing faster, the pressure may have been wrong for some time, but wheel alignment or worn suspension components could also be involved. Resetting the light will not correct either fault.
When not to drive the car
If a tyre looks visibly flat, has a bulge, shows cord or has a cut in the sidewall, do not keep driving to see whether the light clears. Fit a safe spare wheel if you have one and know it is serviceable, or arrange assistance.
You should also avoid driving any further than necessary if the car pulls to one side, vibrates through the steering wheel, feels unstable, or the tyre pressure light came on suddenly at speed. Pull over somewhere safe and inspect the tyres. A rapid loss of pressure needs a tyre repair or replacement, not a dashboard reset.
When the TPMS itself needs diagnosing
If all tyre pressures are correct but the warning lamp flashes, repeatedly returns, or the display says a sensor is unavailable, the fault may be in the monitoring system. Direct TPMS sensors have batteries that eventually run out. They can also be damaged during tyre fitting if they are not handled correctly.
