Why Is My Diesel Smoking? Causes and Fixes
A small puff of smoke on a cold morning is one thing. Smoke that keeps coming from the exhaust, smells unusual, or appears alongside loss of power is another. Why is my diesel smoking?

The important details are the smoke colour, when it happens and how the car drives. Does it only smoke on start-up? Does it smoke under acceleration? Is there a warning light, rough running, poor fuel economy or a noticeable loss of power? These clues help narrow down the cause, but proper diagnostics are what confirm it.
Black smoke: too much fuel or not enough air
Black or dark grey smoke is the most common type we see with diesel engine performance faults. It usually means the engine is receiving more fuel than it can burn cleanly, or it is not getting enough air.
A blocked air filter can contribute, although it is rarely the only problem. More commonly, there may be a split boost hose, a faulty turbocharger control component, a sticking EGR valve or an airflow sensor giving the engine incorrect readings. A leaking intercooler hose can also cause black smoke and poor acceleration because the turbo pressure is escaping before it reaches the engine.
Fuel injector faults are another possibility. An injector that delivers too much fuel, or sprays it badly, can create smoke, uneven running and a diesel smell. This needs testing rather than guesswork. Replacing injectors unnecessarily is expensive, and the real issue could be an air leak or sensor fault.
A DPF problem can sit alongside black smoke too. The diesel particulate filter is there to trap soot. If the engine is making too much soot due to another fault, the DPF can fill up quickly and struggle to regenerate. White smoke: unburnt fuel, coolant or a cold-start issue

Thick white smoke that continues after the engine is warm is not normal. In most cases, it can mean unburnt diesel is leaving the engine. Causes include a faulty injector, poor injector timing, low compression in one or more cylinders, or a glow plug issue that makes cold starting difficult.
You may notice this type of smoke along with a rough idle, misfiring, hard starting or the smell of raw diesel. These are clear signs to get the vehicle checked. Continued driving can increase strain on the DPF and may lead to further engine issues.
White smoke can also be caused by coolant entering the combustion chamber. This is less common, but more serious. Check whether the coolant level is dropping, whether the engine is overheating, or whether the smoke has a sweet smell. A head gasket fault, cracked component or EGR cooler issue may be involved.

Blue smoke: the engine is burning oil
Blue or blue-grey smoke usually means engine oil is being burnt. It may be most obvious after idling, on start-up, or when accelerating after slowing down.

Keep an eye on the oil level. If it is falling between checks and blue smoke is present, do not keep topping it up and carrying on as normal. Low oil can damage the engine, while excess oil in the intake can create a dangerous situation on some diesel engines.

Smoke, DPF warnings and short journeys

The technician should also inspect intake hoses, vacuum lines, the EGR system and any signs of oil or coolant leaks. Injector tests, pressure checks or a turbo inspection may be needed depending on what those initial checks show.
